What is Board Certification? The American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) is a veterinary specialty organization recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Established in 1978, ABVP aims to advance excellence in species-specialized veterinary practice by certifying veterinarians who demonstrate exceptional knowledge, skill, and competency in clinical practice. Veterinarians certified by ABVP, known as Diplomats (DABVP), undergo a rigorous process involving advanced training, case reports, and a comprehensive examination to achieve certification in one or more of ABVP’s 12 Recognized Veterinary Specialties (RVS):
ABVP Diplomates, over 800 worldwide, work in various settings, including private practice, academia, and industry, and are evaluated every three years by the AVMA’s American Board of Veterinary Specialties (ABVS) to ensure high standards. Certification requires at least 4–6 years of clinical experience or a residency, submission of credentials, and passing a one- or two-day exam. The organization’s mission is to promote superior, multidisciplinary veterinary care and enhance animal welfare globally. For more details, visit www.abvp.com |
